Creole Christmas opens Vieux Carre homes

Six French Quarter historic homes will be part of the Friends of the Cabildo’s Creole Christmas Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The historic buildings include the BK House, Gallier House, Hermann-Grima House, 1850 House, The Historic New Orleans Collection and Spring Fiesta House.

Celebrate at Destrehan Plantation

Destrehan Plantation, 13034 River Road, in St. Charles Parish will offer combination tours of the house and walking tours of the Spirit of Christmas Lighting in the Alley of Oaks at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. through Tuesday.

The light show features more than 100 lighted frames and 50 Christmas trees. Admission starts at $5, with children 2 and under free. Visit destrehanplantation.org. 

Battle of New Orleans Tour marks anniversary

Friends of the Cabildo will host a look into the battle that helped define the country’s identity Jan. 8.

This year will mark the 211th anniversary of the United States forces under Gen. Andrew Jackson defeating the British under Gen. Edward Pakenham at what is now Chalmette.

The tour covers the areas not at the battlefield, “from lost locations of forts that protected the city to Jackson’s headquarters to events in the French Quarter related to the unfolding battle.”

Volunteer projects abound at City Park

A variety of cleanup days and initiatives are on tap at City Park to improve and maintain the extensive urban green space. Those coming up include:

Litter Cleanup Krewe: 9 a.m. Tuesday. Volunteer Center.Super Saturday: 9 a.m. Jan. 3. Rear entrance to Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, 8 Stadium Drive.
