After almost dying, I saved my ZZ Plant from Home Depot, and after 3 years, it's FLOWERING! I didn’t even realize this was a thing until it happened. Thought I had a wonky growth. It gets almost full light in a west facing window in NYC, with several hours of direct afternoon sun. I water about once a week, usually at the same time I water my rubber trees, sometime forget a week or two. They sit in the window right next to my central AC intake vent
I usually I feed it Miracle Grow, becasue thats what my grandma used.
I repotted it 3 years ago and did root surgery to remove the mushy rhizome; into a loose mix I made: handfuls of bark mixed in succulent soil, perlite, sand, and peat, in terra cotta pot. It almost died when I lived in a dark apartment and I had it in a glazed pot in the original Home Depot Soil. I brought home a sick jade plant with root rot and it spread to my zz plant within a week. The smell was really awful, a very specific smell you dont notice at first but after you smell it you wont forget
Home remedy antifungal treatments do not work, I had to use Daconil and Copper antifungals
Then It really sprang to life when I moved to an apt on the far west side of manhattan where it sees the sunset, at that point it sprung to life and went from having 12” tall shoots to fat thick 48”.
All the old shoots except for the one shown eventually fell off, and I thought it was dying at that point too (https://www.reddit.com/r/plantclinic/comments/1fz2frw/zz\_plant\_turning\_yellow/)
The fower popped up low at the base, i thought it was malformed bc I hadn’t watered in 3-4 weeks. I watered all my plant with hydrogen peroxide in the water which I do about once every 6 months.
Posting the pics because I’ve heard this is uncommon indoors, and I’m kind of in shock.
