Of course, the first berry that comes to mind at this time of year is holly, famous for its dazzling red berries and glossy – not to mention prickly – green leaves.

It has inspired poets and artists for centuries, not to mention one of our most well-known Christmas carols – The Holly and the Ivy.

That love affair has never died. The berry and its leaf have become a symbol of wintertime itself, appearing on festive pyjamas and jumpers, cards and crackers, and for anyone getting busy with the icing pipe, Christmas cakes.

“There’s no argument about this,” says Guy, “the holly has one of the finest of all the red berries. For many, it is the ultimate berry, but it’s not the fastest-growing plant in the world. However, if you haven’t got the patience to watch your own one grow, many of the RHS gardens have large collections just waiting to be admired and adored.”

So, if you’re planning to walk off all those pigs-in-blankets and turkey leftovers on Boxing Day, a very merry berry sightseeing trip might be just the thing!
