I saw this at a neighbors property and they said mosquitoes land there and the fish eat them and the eggs so it reduces mosquitos.

lol what kinda fish do ya think live in a barrel like that???

this is clearly the ‘more mosquitoes’ barrel, not the ‘less mosquitoes’ barrel

  2. DapperCow15

Yes, that works, but I never saw anyone do it with a barrel like that.

I feel like a few buckets scattered over an area with dunks in them would be more effective.

What I know is that my pond helps reduce the number of mosquitos in my back yard. It has a waterfall + upper filter pond, and I keep it stocked with goldfish. It attracts a lot of birds, beetles, and dragonflies. Any mosquitoes that lay there eggs in the pond are toast. Any that fly in the vicinity are also toast. It makes a noticeable improvement in mosquito activity in my yard versus other areas here.

In central Texas I use old feed tubs with mosquito dunks. It dropped our mosquito population by well over half the past two years compared to earlier years.

I have a 4 ft blue pool hidden in the back of my yard that I toss a mosquito dunk in monthly during the summer . Works like a charm

Having standing water will increase the amount of mosquitoes in the area. Why not just have no water? Creating a problem just to solve it with fish. If they’re treating it with bti then that could help reduce mosquito numbers

You either need dunks/(maybe) torpedos or walmart goldfish. I tried the goldfish, but they got ate. I switched to 2-3 small buckets per acre with a dunk and we haven’t had a problem in years.

    That’s a flooded burn barrel.

    Goldfish reduce them even more!

There are chemicals/bacteria things you can put in the water that kill the mozzie larvae, but i’ve never heard of keeping fish in a bucket. Sounds a bit cruel tbh.

One trick I accidentally stumbled across is to keep a jar with some bladderwort in it. I collected some from my dam in order to identify it, left the jar on my patio table, and within a few weeks the swarming sandfly problem I had was completed gone! It’s been over 6 months and I still haven’t been bitten by a mozzie or sandfly when i’m on the patio.

That’s interesting I’ve never heard of this !

Throw some mosquito bits or dunks in there and yeah they work really well. Non toxic and safe for livestock and wildlife, except for skeeters

Ig you make one yourself remember to add a stick/ “ladder” out of the water to edge of barrel to prevent drowning for small creatures!

If you somehow can get the right kind of fish to live in there perhapse. However there are a lot of different mosquito species with very different kinds of preferences. Many don’t lay eggs in water bodies of that size, or only lay them on plants by/in the water.

One problem is that we often have “waterbodies” that are to small/inhospitibale for the predators of mosquitos but good enough for mosquitos.

Something that worked for my family was a small pond, where dragon flys, frogs, ect. could live and fixxing/filling/removing areas where water used to pool. (However we are in central Europe)
