They’re very tasty but quite painful to eat. I thought they might be like Monstera deliciosa fruit, where the painful raphides (calcium oxalate crystals) go away as the fruit ripens, but that was not the case. Yes, I knew the risk I was taking when I ate a couple.
There are videos claiming that the sharp, needle-like crystals that make them so unpleasant can be filtered out of the juice, but I haven’t tried that myself.
I don’t know how this doesn’t bother birds, but they eat the berries, so 🤷
