EDIT: Love setting my ego aside and learning more about how outdoor lights affect insect populations. Enjoy the photo, but please join me in doing research about this!

I bought these color-changing solar-powered lights to brighten up my winter garden for the holidays and beyond. I hope they spark a little joy to those who pass by, and even further, that it helps change minds about the beauty of a “dead garden” and encourages neighbors to leave their plant matter alone in the fall and winter.

Oh my gosh, those are just adorable! Where did you get them, if you don’t mind sharing?

I love these! What are they called?

Are there any with a shield for the top to control light pollution?

I highly recommend not running lights outside unless they are motion activated. They attract flying bugs and make it easier for predators to eat them. There is also a study that has attributed the lights to causing the insects to confuse up/down (usually up is the sun for them) and causes weird behaviors in them. I’m not doing either of the studies justice, but definitely dig into the research and “the more you know!”

I think they look cool. Not sure where you are but outdoor lights in the winter are OK for the local insect population. It looks like everything is dormant in your garden. I have some christmas light on my bushes during the holidays.

  5. I have solar powered flickering orange lanterns that have held up really well. Looks like a real flame from a distance
