Yo, new study on cutting back stems just dropped(6 months ago). TLDR: most stems aren’t usable as habitat the first winter, too fresh.

    >If a stem is cut or damaged during the growing season, however, bees could move in at that time. Thus, if you trimmed or deadheaded any stems earlier in the season, do not cut them again in the winter.

    The article makes it sound like this applies to first year as well.
