Live in central TX and have some oaks in my recently mulched area that have me concerned. One of them has a very slimy base and it looks like it’s flaking away where it meets the ground. The other has a mushroom that grows on a knot near its base. These trees are 6 feet apart. They still grow branches etc.
I assume I’ll have to cut the smaller one down based on its base could snap and fall on my shed.

Looks like fire damage to me. Agreed that the one that’s leaning with the larger damage will potentially snap in a storm.
