Registration for garden plots at the Cub Creek Community Garden off South Bridge Street in Wilkesboro begins Jan. 5, said Matthew Clay, Wilkes Cooperative Extension horticultural agent.

Clay said people who already have a garden plot there can renew in December.

A registration link will be available in Clay’s January Horticulture Updates newsletter, the Wilkes Cooperative Extension website at https://wilkes.ces.ncsu.edu/ and on the Cub Creek Community Gardens Facebook page.

Paper copies of the registration form will also be available at the extension office in the Wilkes Agricultural Center at 416 Executive Drive, Wilkesboro.

Clay said both new and experienced gardeners are welcome.

The Cub Creek Community Garden was created in 2011 with a $7,000 grant through the Wilkes County Health Department from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Childhood Nutrition, a $1,000 grant from Walmart, Extension plant sale funds and private contributions.

It is provided in cooperation with the Town of Wilkesboro at Cub Creek Park.

Thirty garden plots, each in wooden frames, are available to rent for the 2026 season. Each plot is $25 to rent for the season, which helps cover the costs of supplies such as tools, pesticides, fertilizers and other garden supplies.

The community garden growing season is from Feb. 1 through Dec. 31, with returning gardeners having priority registration to renew their same plots in December each year.

Gardeners are expected to follow the Cub Creek Garden Rights, Privileges, Responsibilities and Obligations, which is at https://shorturl.at/ZgfXe

Clay said monthly newsletters are sent to gardeners during the season to showcase plots in the community garden, provide gardening tips and to announce garden news and updates.
