CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — A winter sowing class focused on native perennial flowers will be offered in Clarion this January, according to a joint announcement by the Master Gardeners of Clarion County and the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society.
The class will take place on Saturday, January 10, at the Main Street Center, at 516 Main Street. Attendees may register for one of two time slots: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each session is capped at 15 people. The cost is $5, payable at the door by cash or check.
Organizers describe winter sowing as a method of placing seeds in vented containers and setting them outside during the winter, allowing them to germinate naturally. According to the release, the approach is safe, simple, and suited for native perennial species.
Participants will receive all supplies, seeds, and informational handouts. After a brief introduction to the technique and the importance of native plants to pollinators and birds, each person will sow five different types of native flowering perennials into recycled jugs. These jugs will be taken home for germination and later transplanting.
Seed varieties for the class include Brown-eyed Susan, Butterfly Weed, Golden Alexanders, Great Blue Lobelia, Little Bluestem, Mountain Mint, Oxeye Sunflower, and Swamp Milkweed.
Pre-registration is required. Interested individuals should email senecarocksaudubon@gmail.com with their preferred time slot, name, email address, and phone number. Registration will be confirmed by reply.
