All you need are a few areolae and you get a *bunch* of clones. She says cacti are easier to use than leafed plants since they are more hardy. Need to order me up some extra spicy cuts!

This is awesome if you have the time and skill.

Wouldn’t grafting on fat rootstock be faster in the long run? I’d assume a tissue culture pup would grow like a seedling. These are just my assumptions

This is not new at all, this so sensationalized. Plenty of people have been doing this for rare plants for years. No hate on her bringing this to more people but she certainly didnt crash the plant market.

I do cactus tissue culture, SWFLcactus on instagram

I don’t think this does anything for cacti unless you’re a large scale grower. Because let’s face it, I can have 1000 clones of SS02 in a Petri dish, but at some point you gonna need the space and resources to be caring for 1000 potted plants. You also have to commit these resources to one specific clone.
I’d argue that for cacti grafting is already waaay faster, cheaper, less time consuming, requires less know how, zero chemicals or equipment, and brings “hotness” clones to market much quicker. You can see this effect on the sales sub, and has already been this way for years now.
For plants that aren’t easily propagated by grafting, or just dipping a small cutting with some cheap rooting hormone and sticking into the ground, I can see this as a game changer. Type this technique in the search bar for this sub, and you’ll also see people have been experimenting with this technique for a while, at least since maybe 2018 I think?

Sterile technique and a bit of equipment opens a lot of doors

I love this girl’s channel she has tons of valuable content, I’m also just getting started tissue culturing different varieties of cacti and succulents myself. I’m thinking I’m going to start with something that has Hardy genetics then move into rarer ones that have different genetic mutations like variegation or crested growth 😀 I’ll definitely document my journey and hope to find other people with similar projects that we can bounce ideas and experiences off of each other

I randomly saw it and thought of my Reddit plant communities. I have seen it done in the peyote sub, and it evidently went great.
