LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Saturday marks two years since the tragic shooting at UNLV’s campus.
A gunman killed three professors and injured a fourth inside Frank and Estella Beam Hall.
The Southern Nevada community was invited to join UNLV in remembering and honoring the victims: Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Patricia Navarro Velez, and Naoko Takemaru.
Interim President Chris Heavey spoke at the event and said, “As we strive to build our new normal, we recognize that the events of that day remain a significant part of our shared history.”
The event also commemorated the resilience and strength within the university community.
Initial renderings of a planned Healing Garden and Dec. 6 Memorial were unveiled during the event.
The garden will be constructed between Hospitality Hall and the Barrick Museum, with a connection to the Baepler Xeric Garden.
The event also honored the resilience of Professor Daraboth “Bot” Rith, who was critically wounded, and acknowledged all community members affected by the shooting.
