ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Alaska Botanical Garden kicked off its annual light display, Brighter Winter Nights, on Thursday. Now in its eighth year, the garden paths are illuminated with more than 30,000 lights, which also include luminaries and ice sculptures.

Garden manager Will Criner said crews have been working on the display since September, getting it ready for the public.

“I think Brighter Winter Nights at the Alaska Botanical Garden is a great event for families to come out and enjoy the outdoors,” Criner said. “It doesn’t require a lot of gear, it’s accessible and it’s a nice thing to do.”

He added that the event is important to help the nonprofit stabilize its funding through the winter.

Criner said in addition to the paved path, there’s a kick sled trail that goes through the woods, fire pits along the way and hot chocolate served in the greenhouse, which also boasts a model train display.

Brighter Winter Nights runs through February with timed entry during peak hours. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Alaska Botanical Garden website.
