When members of Scottish Borders Council meet on Thursday, December 4, they will consider a motion submitted by Hawick and Hermitage SNP councillor Annette Smart.

She is asking members to agree that officers undertake an exploratory assessment on the feasibility of establishing the site within the award-winning Wilton Park.

The motion states: “The Scottish Borders Council Community Food Growing Strategy encourages the creation of spaces that support local food production, community cohesion, and opportunities for learning.

“Wilton Park, in Hawick, is a well-used and centrally located community asset with potential areas suitable for more growing projects involving local schools and community groups.”

The motion calls on officers to “engage with local primary schools, the high school, other interested groups and residents, to gauge support, identify partnership opportunities, and explore models of potential shared stewardship”.

The feasibility study would consider the integration with the Community Food Growing Strategy and contributions to biodiversity enhancement, pollinator-friendly planting, and climate resilience.

The motion highlights the potential benefits to child health, well-being, outdoor learning, and curriculum-linked education.

If approved, a report would be brought back to council with findings and recommendations within six months.
