Last hurricane split my tree down the middle it was struck by lightning years before the storm and weakened the middle of the tree, I’ve been working on cutting as much of the lower branches that I can reach before I shoot the straps off with my 22. I’m gonna miss this tree and all the shade it provides.

Wise perspective. May her “bones” bring you many of warm nights!

You could propably prolong it’s life dramaticly, by removing most of the right side (on the last 2 pics). All that weight removed, would give the “main part” of the tree a fighting chance…

That’s a ton of firewood! At least that beautiful tree is being put to good use!!

Force retrenchment (butcher it). Save the majority of it. It’ll hang in there another several years with routine re-trimming.

I know a crew that would put bolts and a cobra system on it 😂

Southern Live Oaks really are beautiful.

Genuine question – are those straps providing any benefit beyond looking pretty? I have to imagine the mass alone could snap them, let alone the immense leverage of having said mass hanging over the side.

Very sad but at least it is natural. Sorry for your loss.

Amazing how humans can care for trees more than for each other at times. It is said in deed bud, but its a circle of live there ae 1 trillion of others out here germinating, growing and dying. Tis old maybe 300 years old guy had a good life.

Yes that’s going to be a sad day when it’s gone.

I’m sure she appreciates the care in the evening of her time with you.

Please wear safety glasses and be at good range when you let the straps fly. I know too many people who have shot at things only to gain a flashy new scar or in one case lose an eye. Granted, it was a bowling pin at 20 yards, but the lesson from that guy stays with me. Protect those eyeballs and yourself
