The mayor of Poole, Mark Howell, officiated the ceremony at Bourne Valley, near Coy Pond, on November 25.

The poplar, under the threat of possible extinction, was donated by the Countryside Regeneration Trust.

The species is expected to thrive in the water meadow conditions at Bourne Valley.

The ceremonial planting was conducted with Poole’s ornate 19th-century spade, although the actual work was done with a regular spade.

Sheriff Karen Rampton, along with councillors Matthew Gillett and Dawn Logan, were in attendance.

Conservationist Niki Harper from Trees for Wimborne and Rob Stanley, head gardener, were also present.

The planting spot was chosen by Mr Stanley and his team.

It will reinforce those planted earlier in the year, Mayor Miles doing the honours.

A Katsura tree, donated by John Hallett, one of the Friends of Coy Pond, was also planted.

This brings the total number of trees planted by the group in 2025 to six.

The group rounded off the ceremony with refreshments and a chat by the pond.

This marked the end of the season for their Tuesday morning gardening sessions at the 550-foot rockery and surrounding gardens.
