Gardeners’ World viewers all echoed each other as they complained about a segment on the first of the show’s winter specials, which aired on Friday, November 28. Presenter Frances Tophill cut to a film about an Australian woman who moved to the UK specifically to grow the plants she had fallen in love with. She had spent the last 34 years since 1991 creating her dream “paradise garden”. The lush and lavish grounds of her home were incredibly impressive, and she explained that it had been overgrown when she found the property, but she had seen the potential.
“I walked through the back gate there, and it was this utter wilderness. I thought: ‘Oh, this has got possibilities’,” she said. However, viewers seemed to think she had thrown money rather than effort at the project, especially when she introduced her head gardener. They took to X to vent and share their umbrage.
“It’s amazing what you can do with a vision, some hard work and an absolute skip-load of money,” one wrote.
“‘I thought, wow, I’ve got to have this. Luckily, I had a huge bag of cash with me,” a second sarcastically posted.
A third chimed in: “Something tells me that this lady is not ‘on a budget’!”
“This is all very beautiful, but I do hope that these specials feature a few ‘normal’ gardens that us non-millionaires can aspire to,” a fourth penned.
A fifth shared: “Would much rather see what someone did in a 3 metre square plot than what some rich person did in acres with a team of servants.”
However, not everyone had complaints; some were just happy to have the show back, even if only for a few specials.
“Lovely to have #GardenersWorld tonight, great to have the Winter Specials to sustain us. Happy here,” one fan shared.
Despite the stunning transformation she had managed on the property over three decades, the lady did admit she “wouldn’t do it again”.
