It’s that time of year when squirrels and other wildlife dig in our beds, borders and pots in our gardens in search of food, which includes our happily planted and settled spring bulbs. It is very important to protect our spring bulbs against being dug up and eaten, otherwise we will have a flowerless springtime next year.
I use a simple technique to protect my spring bulbs. I cut a square of chicken wire netting that easily fits over a pot. Place a square of chicken wire netting over the pot, then take two corners of the chicken wire netting and intertwine them together and then do the same with the other two corners then fold the two flaps down and mould it round the pot.
This should give the pot adequate protection to stop them being dug in.
The protected pots can be huddled together in a sheltered spot over winter ready to be relocated onto patios in mid to late February, at which time the chicken wire netting can be removed.
The spring bulbs in beds and borders can be covered and protected with chicken wire netting, using metal or wooden stacks to pin it down.
The effort to protect the spring bulbs is very much worth it, as we want to be delighted by spring flowers.
