Goals: Level, kid-friendly yard north of Houston.
Plan: Remove rock, run new irrigation, bring in soil, lay sod.
Background: Tall fescue in northwest Texas, quite involved and expanded that yard with 10,000 sqft sod/irrigation.
Moving south and the new house has a rock yard. I've got the chance to start a brand new yard and do it right. The old irrigation is long corroded, so I'll put in new zones, too. I'm planning on zoysia sod because of the shade and high traffic (three kids and a dog). The most recent downpour showed no signs of standing water or drainage problems. The front yard has health St. Augustine.
What do I need to consider with this project? When to do it? How to best prep for leveling? What kind of irrigation heads? Pine trees and needles?

I’m 4-5 hours north of you and put in Emerald Zoysia. I like it because it feels like carpet. Backyard still looks good, even has a lot of green currently, while the front yards are dormant. I have a live oak and will likely have to re-do some areas that appear to have died off beneath the tree.
The one mistake I did was not leveling out the ground better. Theres definitely bumps you can feel while walking but it doesnt seem to bother others
I’m in Memorial and did Zoysia, it’s great. Only downsides it needs a lot of water and is very slow to recover from damage.
