Grow Together – Bucks CIC, a Chalfont St Giles-based gardening group, is taking part in the Heritage Seed Library’s UK-wide project to conserve and grow heritage vegetable varieties.

As part of the scheme, the group will grow the ‘French Golden’ heritage radish on its community allotment.

Richard Andrews, director of Grow Together – Bucks CIC, said: “We’re delighted to have been invited to participate in the seed relay.

“Preserving heritage seeds is so important to maintain diversity of seed varieties.

“We’re looking forward to sowing the radish in the spring and harvesting them – and then sharing the seeds among our volunteers.”

The Heritage Seed Library (HSL), based at charity Garden Organic, is celebrating 50 years of seed conservation with the seed relay.

The relay aims to strengthen food resilience by sharing and growing out heritage seeds across the country.

Fiona Taylor, CEO of Garden Organic, said: “The Heritage Seed Library conserves seed by sharing it, and this work is a continual relay between places and generations to ensure the survival of heritage vegetables.

“Passing seed on to be grown by friends, neighbours and future generations is a simple action that gardeners and growers can take to ensure our food crops adapt to climate change.”
