I let it grow a bit out of curiosity, but I still can't figure out what this thing is. Help, please and thanks!

Probably Malva sp. maybe neglecta or parviflora, but hard to know 100% w/o flowers. Common name is cheeseweed

Just a glimpse of a leaf, and my brain instantly names this genus. I have parviflora at my place. At the end of our honey flow, and in the evening, honey bees choose these flowers to clamber over. Grey pollen, I think from memory. I imagine they are attractive to any pollen feeder.

I once Bought some Malva seed from a specialist seed seller, out of curiosity. It was a deeper purplish, slightly deeper green leaves. It crossed with my weeds.

Around here people curse it. It establishes and survives easily in the summer drought, and grows to be massive, the upper taproot a challenge for loppers. Once conditions are right for germination, it can be the dominant weed seedling. Some German visitors ate the green seed head, my kids followed their lead, we still remember them.
