this is kinda a summation post for the end of this year, I've been documenting my collections over on the bonsainut thread here: Collecting P. sylvestris from the mòine àrdaich.
"With my conservation work over the past year I've found myself in raised bogs (gaelic: mòine àrdaich) more than a handful of times. I've worked as part of a team to removing saplings, predominantly birch from the bogs to preserve water levels which maintain these endangered SSSI's.
As the bogs are essentially giant areas of wet sphagnum moss, many things can quickly thrive. Along with the birch in a few sites I've found encroaching growth from coniferous plantations including P. sylvestris, Picea sichensis and Pseudotsuga menszii. All which have to be removed…
…i won't be sharing any information about the locations of these bogs nor the organisation/s ive worked with for the sake of conservation and privacy."
This year I've collected 4 P. sylvestris, the photos are in order of collection throughout the year- at the time they were potted, the first pine collected before candle flush, the latter three all after. the only one showing signs of decline thus far is the second. where I was possibly too heavy handed with root reduction, the substrate also less than ideal.
the first, produced fairly healthy candles this year, and had escape rooted out of the teracotta and through a second large pot it's nested in (not pictured) for stability.
