An eighth of an acre of growing space produces enough vegetables, berries, and herbs to last our family of six for the year. We have more land that we use as pasture for our cows and chickens, but our actual garden space could fit into most people’s backyards. This year, we harvested 213 lbs of sweet potatoes from only four raised beds. That’s a lot of calories from a very small space. Moral of the story, don’t wait to start growing your own food until you have all the acreage you think you need. You can make a huge dent in your family’s self-sufficiency goals with just one or two crops. After all, the true spirit of homesteading is do what you can with what you have.

  1. Your garden is bigger than our entire lot! Lol! We are in the city and have 1/10th an acre, but, we have a giant garden, chickens, rabbits, and a pig…and I am set up for quail, just haven't taken the leap! Pretty much every square inch of our lot is being used!! 🙏💓

  2. I didn't see any Morels in this story XD
Love what you're doing and aspire to have a crumb of the mindset that allows this to happen. 💙

  3. Do what you can with what you have even if it's just a balcony. Use pots and or grow bags. You can use one of those towers too. Everyone has more vertical space than horizontal space.

  4. Isn't it bizarre that a little over 100 years ago, this was standard. No other way of life. Now, your life is exotic and rare.

  5. I need so much help. People have said they would clear land for me but never have. I am also nee at grow and dont know where to start.

  6. Your sweet potato planting box is the size of most modern aussie back yards. You don't get a lawn or yard. You get a strip of ground that won't even grow grass because it doesn't get sun because the neighbours houses and fences block it all… Australia is FUUUCKED.
