Gardeners’ World fans were left emotional as host Monty Don bid the programme and its viewers farewell with a heart-warming message as the programme was pulled off air. The beloved BBC series offers its green-fingered enthusiasts practical advice about plants, their gardens and wildlife, with the occasional appearance from other professionals, horticulturists and hobby gardeners. However, as fans tuned in for Friday’s (November 21) episode, they were quickly reminded that this was the last instalment for 2025, as they watched Monty prepare his garden for the harsher climates.

The 70-year-old lifted and stored his dahlias, made leafmoulds, and planted his tulips and wallflowers in pots. He also took root cuttings from one of his favourite herbaceous perennials. But as the episode came to an end, emotional viewers took to social media bidding the programme farewell. One remarked: “Well that’s me down in the dumps! At least we have the extras to keep us going. Keep smiling peeps till next spring #Gardenersworld.” As another added: “Slightly depressing that’s the last #GardenersWorld until Spring apart from the specials.”

A third added: “Aww that’s our programme over, thank you team #GardenersWorld You’ve excelled yourselves this year, great programmes every week, and winter specials to look forward to. Take care, keep gardening and I look forward to Spring 2026.”

“Does anyone else feel a wee bit ‘meh’ when it comes to the end of the GW season? I think I need to get a SAD lamp to see me through till spring. And dig out the seed catalogues. Take care everyone, time to rest,” said another.

As a fifth admitted: “Can’t bear the thought of a winter without Monty & Ned… and Adam, Ash, Isla and Buster… oh, AND Frances and Rua… we need regular updates! I’ll miss you guys… ** Starts sobbing **.”

While another fan praised: “Another wonderful series #GardenersWorld.”

While Gardeners’ World series 32 has ended, Monty opened up about the upcoming special, which fans will be able to enjoy before the programme’s official return next spring and during the sneak peeks, it was revealed that singer Will Young will make an appearance.

Monty shared: “Although the gardening year at Longmeadow is gently coming to a close in the weeks ahead, we’ve got four special programmes for you, celebrating getting out in the garden in winter and all the joys of the garden across the seasons.

After the preview played, the beloved presenter returned to screens with an emotional goodbye. He said: “That’s it for today, and looking back over the year, I have to say it has been a really unusual year, at times quite tricky and other times pure delight.

“We had a glorious spring, but of course it was quite dry. At the time, we thought that was a good thing, but of course it was followed by the driest summer ever recorded and certainly the driest I’ve known here at Longmeadow.”

He added: “Having said that, it’s been one of the best fruit years I can ever remember … and like with all things to do with climate change, we gardeners are having to adapt and change and learn … but that’s it for today and I look forward to seeing you back here next spring for a new season of gardening.”
