Hi all,
I’m in the UK and have an acer in my garden that I’d like to prune properly, but I’m a bit nervous about taking too much off or doing it the wrong way and accidentally killing it. I'm assume December is a good time so I have some questions!
Roughly how much can I safely take off in one go without stressing or damaging the tree?
Are there particular branches I should prioritise first, for example any that are dead, crossing, rubbing, or looking a bit unhealthy? I'm a total newbie
Are there any signs I should watch out for that might mean a branch is diseased or could be harmful to the rest of the tree if left?
Is there a particular style or overall shape I should be aiming for with an acer (like open, layered canopy), and how do I decide which branches to keep for structure and which ones to remove, especially where they overlap or crowd each other?
Lastly, do you recommend any specific tools for pruning an acer, and what should I avoid using? And any aftercare or thing I should keep an eye out for after I've pruned it?
Cheers!

Jacksons Nurseries have a good info page on pruning *Acer palmatum*, yours looks like one of the Dissectum group cultivars.
This will be a multi-year project, best to err on the side of caution this winter, remember that you can pinch out shoots in spring, and also summer prune in mid to late summer. Watch how your tree responds next summer to a light winter prune, and use this information to plan a further gentle prune in Dec 2026
Personally I’d say December is not a good time. I’d wait until Spring. It will respond well then.
