Hi! I am super new to terrariums but I just built my first closed terrarium. This was a project for a senior design course I am in in college, as I am a design major. We got to design and build anything, within certain constraints, and I chose a terrarium! I did research on how to fill it up and what layers to use as the base and what plants and such. The panels were done with a cnc router, held together by wooden dowels and I built the actual terrarium with laser cut acrylic pieces that I bonded together. Im looking forward to seeing how it grows!!!

Created in November 2025, plants are dragon’s tongue, fittonia, mixed genus fern, and mixed genus pothos. Light source is window, but needs low light. Water was just tap, but if i did it right hopefully the closed terrarium will have its own little water cycle so not watering on any schedule.
Substrate layers are: course sand, orchid bark, activated charcoal, sphagnum moss, and coco coir, with a little bit of outside dirt when i was trying to put in springtails. The acrylic part of the build which actually holds the plants is 13.5” in length, 6” in width, and 22” in height.
Interesting but seems kinda hard to see the actual terrarium
