Hello! First post in this forum, go gentle.
I love looking at nice gardens, would love to have a nice garden but no idea where to start.
I believe some keen gardeners had our house for 20 years – there’s an array of established shrubs, red Robin, fuschia, a bay tree & various fruit trees here which I’m going to get someone to prune / trim in Jan or Feb.
In the meantime this south facing bed is my number 1 priority to sort.
FIRST PIC Are these weeds that should be removed? Plant identifier on my phone says creeping Jenny – should I keep it as ground cover and to help the clay soil and remove it in Spring?
2ND PIC Next to the clump of whatever’s “creeping” above, a bush has either died or been infected with something….do I dig the whole thing out ?

Creeping jenny is harmless enough, plants grow through it so not much of a problem. Has little flowers early in the year so provides some bee foid
Yep creeping jenny-a goid indicator of heavy/wet soil,an ok ground cover-the gold version is really quite nice.
The 2nd pic? Cant identify the shrub-but its condition doesnt auger well!
Yes Creeping Jenny my namesake we tend to leave it where it creeps to as it keeps out a lot of weeds… the yellow flowers are very pretty & are a food source for pollinators. I have quite a lot of perennials that grow quite happily through it so not a problem for us. the other shrub plant I am not too sure of, Happy Gardening & good luck I’m still learning after 50 plus years of Organic gardening always a work in progress & so rewarding yeah 👍🏻 ☘️🐦⬛🫛🥕🧅🥔🧄🍏🍐🍇🍓🌸🌼🌻🌷
We always grew roses on the clay soil in Sussex.
Also noticed some Fushia in the background and possibly a wisteria how lucky yes, you could be quite surprised at what may be there in the garden also clay is the best problem soil to have, we are on the Wirral Peninsula in Bebington North West of england our soil is heavy clay but over the years we have used the no dig method and just added lots of compost leaves grass cuttings & organic material the worms do a lot of the work… It’s a 1/5th of an acre so is quite a work in progress all the time 😆we manage to grow lots of produce have fruit trees, all Organic for over 45 years and have no major pests or problems the soil is richer and we are very proud of our Work in progress,
Once again good luck, happy gardening and enjoy the learning process it’s a wonderful thing! ☘️🐦⬛🌻🌷🍇🍏🌼🐦⬛🦔🐿️🐓🌳🕷️🐞🪱🕸️🦋🐝🪲🐛🦇🐦⬛
Creeping Jenny is a good one, keep it, or not (it’s your garden) but it shouldn’t cause any problems and is a good native.
Honestly it looks to me like the second picture has been sprayed with roundup. I don’t think it’s going to survive, whatever has happened to it.
