Hi, I’m new to AVs and I’m still trying to learn what to look for. This little plant grew from a single leaf and it’s finally something! It all seems a little all over a place and I think I saw someone post a picture of their cutting turning into several little plants. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to separate them or not. Appreciate any help, thanks!

Well I took your picture and marked where I thought you could separate it but I can’t post pictures here… but you can?.. odd… anyway yeah if you wiggle the root cluster it looks like you could gently get two crowns out of that.

My experience with ‘ugly’ suckers is they can look funky at first but as they settle in a small pot (or red solo cup is what I use) then new leaves will come in looking more normal.

Edit: no need to cut, I’ve always just gently pulled and they come apart just fine.

Respectfully, I would never, ever ever do this to a plant. Fully dig it up from the soil, wash the roots, and i’m assuming there was some poking at it. It’s bad enough plants often have a hard time recovering from the shock of being replanted. I personally would not take this risk.

I wasn’t sure if I had another baby plant coming in or new leaves. I very gently shook up the soil ( when I was moving a for sure mother leaf that started a baby plant) to see if it would separate easily. It didn’t, so I let it be. I am a firm believer we all need to garden according to our style. But every time I see something like this, I literally wince for the plant.
