Unfamiliar with this species, but I do know that all cactus spines are actually modified leaves — so it may be trying to give them more surface area for photosynthesis in response to insufficient light. Just a guess, I could be totally wrong. Looks super cool tho! Lol

It’s mellowing out with age. Same thing happened to my dad.

Those spines are massive. Without them, I’d confidently call that an Eve’s Needle Cactus. Mine has more ‘hair’ around shorter spines. But it is spikier at the base than the top.

Uhm I have the same cactus.
This is how it grows. Wish I knew its name…
EDIT: I think its “Eve’s pin” …Austrocylindropuntia subulata

This appears to be Austrocylindopuntia subulata. The “arms” are its leaves. These can be fairly persistent but usually drop with age and redevelop on newer growth. These plants can be nearly spineless and may develop more with age. My guess as to why yours has these spines is that it was started with a more mature cutting that already had them.

I think the body has spines but that kinda like bloom growth, not stem so it’s spineless
This is called Eve’s Needle… I’m going to post three pictures to warn you… do not ever put one in a big pot! Please learn from my mistake, or you will actually fear one of your plants.
These are around 10 yrs old…I started with just one little cactus. I will never transplant them in larger pots, they grow like wildfire…
