Two cousins, both 23, one an MBA graduate and the other a software engineer, and their 19-year-old engineering student friend were killed in an accident in which their speeding car rammed into the pillar of the Pune Metro’s Bund Garden station in the early hours of Sunday.
The Koregaon Park police said the accident occurred around 5 am on Bund Garden Road, under the Bund Garden Metro station.
The police identified the deceased cousins as Rutvik Vinayak Bhandari alias Om, a resident of Pimpri Gaon and an MBA graduate in finance who worked for a private firm, and Yash Prasad Bhandari, a software engineer working for a company in Pune.

Their friend Khushwant Kishor Tekwani, 19, a resident of the Beed district, a BTech student at MIT College in Pune, who was on life support and was being treated at Sassoon General Hospital, passed away later in the day.
The police said that, as per the initial investigation, Rutvik was driving the Volkswagen Polo car. Officers said the car was travelling at such a high speed that it was completely mangled after the impact.
Senior Inspector Sangeeta Jadhav of the Koregaon Park police station under the Pune city police said, “Initial probe suggests that the car hit the pillar of the metro station at very high speed. There were three passengers in the car, and all of them sustained very severe injuries.” After the accident, some locals and the police rushed the injured to the Sassoon General Hospital.
While the Bhandari cousins were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, Tekwani was kept on ventilator support. “Tekwani passed away during treatment, an officer said.

The police said that after the post-mortem, the bodies will be handed over to the family members. Their viscera will be preserved for chemical analysis, officers added.
An officer from the Koregaon police station said, “We are establishing the exact sequence of events leading up to the accident. Primary observations suggest that the driver lost control and rammed into the pillar. We are investigating whether any factors contributed to the mishap. The CCTV cameras in the area are being examined.”
