We had a tree service clean up some trees in our backyard and trim this tulip polar. However my husband and I are unsure if this was a trim or a murder. Please give your thoughts … will this tree come back healthy and thriving or rot from the inside out and fall on our house ?? Crime scene photos above (Before pic is the final pic). TIA!!!

You asked them to trim a tulip tree. Why? You should have made your expectations more clear. They “pollarded” that tree (REALLY hard). It will probably live, but it will look like a pom-pom for a few years. You’ll need to have someone prune the pom-pom into something that will look normal again. In about 10 years, it could look reasonably normal again.

I can’t see any work that tree needed in your ‘before’ photo. Unless perspective is playing tricks on me, that’s just about the longest clear tuliptree trunk I’ve ever seen. What was the goal of trimming it?

If they weren’t arborists you screwed up

They serviced the shit out of that tree, no arborculture involved.

I suggest reaching out to the company (in writing) and asking WHY they made these cuts.

Maybe they have some kind of logic for it, or plan. Potentially the tree was doing poorly or something?

This will help you document your concern with the work and give them a chance to explain.
