It is hard to believe, but the 2025 garden season is over. We’ve had frost forecast for the past couple of weeks, so frost or freeze is coming. I’m kind of ready for freeze but, at the same time, sad. I’m ready to shut down the water bill, and so is Marge. We are ready to do something other than garden. Maybe wet a line and see if the fish are biting. We’ll miss the garden.
We picked our fall green beans twice in the last couple of weeks, and both times got a bunch of beans. Thirty-five quarts off the first picking, and we had enough from the second picking to give some away and eat all we wanted. Some of our friends are up in years, and we wanted to share. We only plant Jade green beans. You can read about all the good traits of other varieties, but when it comes to green beans, Jade are the best. Hands down. If the freeze waits another couple of weeks, we’ll have one more picking.
We also planted one row of cucumbers and had some awesome cucumbers until they decided to just quit and die, and it was overnight. I suspect a mole went down the row of cucumbers eating the roots, but you know what, the cucumbers lasted until my turnips were about ready to pick. I’d go pick four or five cucumbers and have them as a before supper snack along with a cup of coffee. When the cucumbers quit a couple of weeks ago, I’d go past the turnips and find four or five, which became my snack along with coffee. The turnips were a dab smaller than tennis balls; most are still small, but now and then, a three-incher can be found.
I had one mess of turnip greens, and they tasted pretty good. The last couple of weeks, we’ve been throwing the tops over to our “Crippled Heifer”. She has a busted shoulder so she’s three-footed and can’t get around like on four. When we throw the turnip greens in her pen, she is Johnny on the spot after them. She seems to really enjoy them. We had a doe and fawn spend the summer in the back of the house. Something happened to the doe, so the young deer has been in the turnip patch.
We picked peppers a month or so ago and got quite a few to cut up and freeze. Marge was able to cut up and freeze several one-gallon bags of peppers: red, green, orange and yellow. The other evening, Marge and I picked a bunch of peppers. We gave away some, I ate my fair share and Marge is cutting up what’s left to freeze. I like peppers in everything from green beans to scrambled eggs to meatloaf to stuffed peppers to sloppy Joes to soups, and on and on. We’ve been putting some under the broiler, and when the skin turns black, it will peel off and what’s left is pure awesome, good on sandwiches, crackers and just alone.
