First attempt at sweet potato. Terrible soil. Mostly neglected. Forced to remove while they still had a TON of green leaves. I laugh every time I see them. Are they actually ok to eat? Not expecting much, but it's definitely more mass than the two seed potatoes I started with.

They LOOK just fine, good. But I wouldn’t be able to tell you more from looking at them.

  2. BurnedUp11

They look like the flood from Halo. But still look like they are fine to eat

Well I’d wash off that dirt first

Are you sure you didn’t get those from the set of Dr Pimple Popper?

Wait, these are sweet potatoes right? Your comment about starting from seed starters is confusing me. Better to start from slips. You have hard ground, try hilling next year. In hard ground, they tend to also twist into each other and multiple ones become a big intertwined glob. Totally edible.

Those are edible, like absolutely nothing wrong with them, everyone has those when producing, its jut they sort them out before selling them to the supermarkets. Don’t worry

Sweet potatoes make weird shapes sometimes. Perfectly fine to eat. The bigger one’s just take a hunkier knife to cut. They’ll be sweeter a few weeks after harvest as the carbs convert to sugars.

And the winner for the ugliest sweet potatoes ever is….

  9. constantdaydream44

Cut them up and you wont know the difference 🙂

Ugly food is still food. Grocery stores have really fucked up our food habits and mentality.

Next year, use a garden fork to mix in hay or leaves until your soil is lighter, less dense. For a higher yield and better tasting potato add potassium to your soil.

    Please keep gardening!

It looks like a suckling pig when you push them together

I really thought for a half second that bottom potato was a small roasted chicken 😂

It’s perfectly edible. Buying only the nicest looking fruit & veg from supermarkets & grocery stores has simply altered our baseline perception of what food should look like. Most of the stuff like this gets tossed out.

Damn those are some chonkers! Edible, just most ‘ugly’ produce gets filtered out of grocery stores and is processed elsewhere.

  16. speadskater

Both small and large sweet potatoes taste the same cut up.

  17. Maleficent_Public_11

Did you save the leaves? They’re supposed to be really tasty. I think Vietnamese food uses them a bit(?)

    👏👏👏

Great job! Be proud of yourself! These will be the best you have ever eaten!😎 (eaten/ate…?.🤔proper grammar is not my forte 😁!)

Why not edible? Is the “terrible soil” some superfund site?

  20. Entropy3389

It’s comical that you have a complete normal one, a monster that should go directly to /r/AbsoluteUnits , and a weird… little… stick… thingy.

So cool looking. They look like orcs outta a Tolkien novel

  22. Whornz4

It took me a few seconds to process what I was looking at. Those look huge

  26. WentzWorldWords

    Everything can be edible…once.

  27. VamVam6790

Edible for sure once washed. A bit ugly maybe, and difficult to peel if you were planning to…but definitely edible

Ps. I love the little wormy one, he’s my favourite 😊

I have some still in the soil that I’ll be digging up this weekend since we hit our frost. It will be interesting to see if they are similar to yours. It’s the first time I’ve grown them.

  29. wheelperson

What would make you think they are not ok?
