The stump turned out to be smaller on top than below ground. The roots were intertwined in a huge tangle. Surprise.
It took longer than planned, but we managed to chip away at the debris to a depth of 12 inches and a diameter of about 3 yards. We won’t be able to plant another tree here, and a new lawn will grow in the spring.
