The Arkansas County Master Gardeners hosted a reception on Friday, Oct. 24, in honor of their 30-year anniversary as an organized group in Arkansas County and to show appreciation to Betty Archer for her 30 years of dedication to the program. The reception was held in the Community Room of Phillips Community College, DeWitt campus. As home economist for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in Arkansas County, Mrs. Archer was the original organizer for the county program in 1995. She is still active in the program and is a mentor to all of her peers.

Mrs. Archer was presented a certificate of appreciation by Phil Horton, Arkansas County Extension Agent-Agriculture and Pat Kizzire, President-Arkansas County Master Gardeners. County Judge Eddie Best provided a proclamation recognizing the Master Gardeners and Mrs. Archer for their 30 years of volunteer service in the county.

Special guests were Randy Forst, Extension State Consumer Horticulture Specialist/Master Gardener Coordinator, and Janet B. Carson, retired State Extension Horticulturist Specialist. Mrs. Carson was the original coordinator for the State Master Gardener program, which began in 1988 in Arkansas and worked with Mrs. Archer in getting the Arkansas County program established. Each shared memories of working with the county group and expressed deep appreciation and praise to Mrs. Archer for her many hours of dedication and service spent in organizing, training members and promoting the program, and the establishment of numerous beautification projects throughout the county over the past 30 years.
