A couple of people told me, it's fine, but IDK!

Ya I’d keep cutting it before the first freeze

  2. TheDrWormPhD

Yup. Last cut should be low enough snow and ice won’t make the grass lay over and matt down.

It’s a personal preference. I mow at 4″ for the summer and try to keep it at 2.5 or 3″ for fall and winter. My mower gives a cleaner looking cut at the shorter heights and my small dog hates the longer grass, especially on colder mornings with dew.

3″ is in the ok range. I go to 2.5″ in winter. But…I’m a bit north and get more snow and snow mold is a problem. The ONLY reason to go shorter in winter is to avoid matting. Otherwise, higher, like in summer, crowds out the bad stuff.

I’m in 6a also. I cut it to 2.5” last week. I noticed it hadn’t been growing much the last two weeks so that was prob the last for me. This morning had a light frost so I’m done for sure

I wouldn’t go lower, just maintain current level. You don’t want too much soil exposed in the summer or when it’s freezing

Yes 2.5-3 inches is usually the sweet spot for cold season grass

Now when you say freeze, is that the first frost or when the frost line begins. I just cut my lawn today after 3 frost morning’s. Days are about 50 and sunny so I feel its still growing.

You want to cut it to around 2″ before it snows. Gives it the best chance against fungus and against pests burrowing in it.

6a as well; you look good, wouldn’t be overly concerned. If we get a warm up in November I might do one last mow on mine to mulch in some leaves. Another benefit of switching to electric I can plop the battery in whenever I want.

along the same lines, it is fall here where we are 6a. Do you guys still water your grass and turn on sprinklers daily?

I just want to know why your damaged/dormant areas seem to follow your tire lines?

Your lawn looks good. What kind of grass is it?

  14. I was surprised that many comments suggest cutting it shorter for winter, while my experience is that longer is better. Then I realized that my definition of short is under 1 inch, and my definition of long is 1.5 inches. Above 2 inches, it’s called a jungle.
