Some kind of granite schist? You tryna match ?

Looks like hammered concrete. Pumice usually has more porous structure. You may want to check pH for compatibility with the species you want to plant.

Looks like volcanic tephra or lapilli to be exact. Same stuff that buried Pompeii.

It’s scoria. A type of volcanic lava rock.

It’s hard to tell without a better resolution closeup, but it looks like crushed, recycled concrete to me.

These stones are a nightmare to keep clean. Even with heavy duty landscape cloth, weeds will grow through them and you either have to spray them or hand weed. They migrate to the lawn and make fun little projectiles when you hit them with a mower. They heat up in the summer and cook the roots of any trees that you’ll plant in there – especially the darker ones. Imo, they only look decent for a few months after install.

I know this because the previous owners of my house did this with similar rocks to everything while trying to sell. They used plastic tarps underneath and still weeds constantly popped up. I had to dig them all out by hand, and I’m still finding them years later.
