Hey everyone,

This is not my property or neighbors, but this house on our walk was recently sold, and the new owners have been doing a lot of work. They had cut down all the big beautiful trees on their yards which had irked us, but now I see that they have a gung-ho fence crew, and they drilled directly through the roots of their neighbor's tree.

Is this tree likely to die? And the second question, would it likely to topple in a storm (or even without a storm), since I am not sure what is keeping it tethered now with the roots gone (and the weight is unbalanced due to the cut branch.

To make things worse, the other side -where the tree might fall over- is an infant and toddler daycare, where there are a lot of kids all the time.

If this is dangerous I want to leave a notice to the daycare people. I do not know enough tree law about the legality aspect. Either way it looks to me like a not OK thing ethically, but I want to at least make sure that the kids/neighbors are safe.

If my car was there I’d move it

Yes, that tree is going to die, and yes, that tree is very likely to blow over if the wind comes from the right direction. Ask her to contact a Certified Arborist to perform a tree risk assessment.

Oh lord. Often times, the tree falls over on the opposite side of massive root cuts. Unless it’s already leaning in a particular direction. Alert your neighbors and get those cars out of there. Head over to r/treelaw for region specific advice regarding legal channels. Or at least, point the owner towards it.

Its absolutely cooked and a hazard at this point.

Strong wind might blow tree into that house.

It took a lot of effort, I’ll give them that. I don’t know who gets more bs from fence guys; arborists, irrigation techs, or utility guys.

Look at how they massacred my boy.

This is some of the worst “will it be okay” yet..holy crap thats a dead tree.

Ignoring the frequent posts of fence crews that constantly mutilate tree roots – yes tree is dead and going to fall over.

Why do half of these posters have the audacity to feel “irked” or “frustrated” over someone cutting down a tree on their own property. This is the equivalent of someone that builds a taller deck just to see over the new taller fence their neighbor put in.

That’s quite impressive. Wonder how many chains they went through. Also take that tree out asap

I think you either get trees as a property line, or a fence as a property line.  People gotta stop hoping for both.

Wow I thought it was whatever is to the left but zoomed in. Nope

    Tree will die.

But honestly… that cut is kind of impressive.

Good lord. I think I would’ve stopped and asked myself if I know wtf I’m doing. Apparently these fencers did not

  15. HesCrazyLikeAFool

That’s like a prime example of danger

  16. Usually the ‘Is this tree cooked?’ posts are people who are overreacting a bit but ya that tree is toast.

Thank you OP for looking out for the neighborhood and the daycare!

i think more cities need to be like lake forest IL. every tree above a certain diameter is considered a “heritage tree” and requires a permit to remove. city forester visits each property to approve the permits. always need a reason. fun fact this became a rule because Mr T owned a home there and cut down a bunch of big old oak trees.

    Hopefully no strong winds forecast

Yes, that tree is a goner, but it also appears to be a Norway maple, so no great loss IMHO

I understand that trees take a lot of knowledge and care that the lay person doesn’t understand. But what kind of contractor fucks up someone’s property this bad and thinks it’s ok to just leave it with out notifying the owner or consulting a professional on how to deal with the tree that is in their way of laying down fence.

The abandoned minivan in your driveway will soften the fall.

  23. neatureguy420

RIP, tell the daycare to sue the shit out of them

  24. misanthroseph

That thing is already planning which car it’s going to crush. I’m sorry they murdered that tree.

  25. TheItalianMustachio

If you imagine the root system like your heart, they just cut a third of it out. That tree isn’t going to live. It also has little stability now and could fall in the direction opposite if the cut roots.

  26. ayalaidh

I didn’t see any roots until I zoomed in and realized it was *all* roots

  27. Emily_Porn_6969

My guess is it will die . That is a lot of damage .

  28. girlsax8

Looks like a law suit trees are actually valuable for your property

  29. Foreign_Lawfulness34

It’s best to get rid of trees on the property line anyway because all you get is disputes with the neighbor. And who needs that?

  30. maddcatone

Not only did they FUCK that tree royally, the owner of that minivan should probably inspect their vehicle, cause that much dirt on it that far away from the trench indicates the dirt that hit it was moving at appreciable velocity. Any rocks that went with it are likely to have left quite a few dings. What a fucking hack job. How do people have jobs with work like that

These photos make me irrationally angry. I’m not an arborist, tree guy, or landscaper, but I am a fan and follower of this sub. This post makes me want to cry.
