In this video, I’ll share practical tips for designing my narrow garden on the south side of my property. At just 8 feet wide, I use undulating raised beds and a collection of containers to maximize planting space. The open wire mesh fence supports vines and espaliered evergreens, adding dimension to this compact area.

This is a very narrow garden It is only 8 feet wide And it is amazing to me and Amazing to people who have come through the garden how many Plants I pack in here. And I do that in By utilizing a couple of different techniques. When you’re gardening In a narrow space there’s a couple of things you can do to Enlarge the space and make it A plant-filled garden. Not only am I using the Ground plane. I’ve got a bed running on this side That is Wider in some areas. Narrower in others And I’ll take about that in just a second So I’ve got growing on the ground plane, growing on the wall Growing in containers, and creating a Canopy and enclosure up above with some of the Taller plants. So back to the bed The other thing about the bed is that it undulates So it’s wide, goes to narrow, wider right here Goes in, tucks in, has a little bit of waist Right here and then enlarges again. And where it’s Larger that makes it more hospitable to Tree-like plants, so allow us to have a enough room in that bed that a tree or large shrub trained as tree Can actually be grown and Create that kind of canopy enclosure we’re looking for Narrow areas are Are what give you room to move And makes the bed flow. So those narrow Spots … a lot of time what people do in really small gardens, they think oh gosh, I don’t have very much space, so I have to Do a very narrow bed all the way along and they do A two or three foot bed the whole length of this And you don’t really … It’s more effective, in my opinion, to do narrow And then enlarge it in different areas and then This side I’m also enlarging It the other way. I’m maintaining a Path that is very serviceable. There is about a three foot path That goes all the way along through here Using both sides and undulating makes For a much more interesting space
