This (the last photo, sorry for poor quality) had a nearly 5 foot vine with no leaves so I researched what to do and it said to cut it up with at least one node per cut and place in water to propagate. I did that and I’m excited to see new growth after about 4 weeks but I’m confused. Are these new leaves? They don’t look like roots. Is it both?

Thank you for your responses and help! I’m brand new to this.

Those are leaves. The little brown nubs are roots!

The ones pointing up are new leaves. I would cut on either side of each node and snuggle it in damp sphagnum moss with the leaf facing up.

cotyledon, new foliage growth, this is the practice leaf if you will

  4. Those are new leaves. For some reason, it’s growing leaves before roots. I have some right now that have done the same thing.

From my experience, I think you probably don’t need to worry about those rotting or anything in the water, because they seem to grow just fine without any damage when they develop underwater. (You don’t want any leaves that grew above water to start getting wet because they’re not as tolerant.)

Anyway, that means your cuttings are definitely alive and you should start seeing real roots before long.
