My dad decided he’s been failing to grow grass in very shady, very heavy clay for too long (30+ years). He said it only looks good for two months per year. Came over to our place and saw our white wood asters and blue mistflower and asked me to help him replace his turf grass with a shade pollinator paradise. The clay was probably construction soil put down 50 years ago and barely loved since so manual and automatic tilling was very necessary. Planted about 350 plugs of mostly local ecotypes: blue wood aster, white wood aster, blue mistflower, phlox divaricata, packera aurea, plus some non-native hydrangeas and azaleas at the back. Fingers crossed for spring! I suspect it will be well worth the effort.
PS now I know why landscapers charge such exorbitant fees. It’s gotta be a hard business to run at a small scale.
