You don’t need a ton of experience or money to start a garden. In this video, I’m going to show you how you could start a fall garden without breaking the bank. So, I recently picked up 18 vegetable plants for $29. And I also picked up a few different types of herbs for $3.99 each and some seeds. All of which came to around $100. So, you can definitely start a small garden without spending a ton of money. And before I get into the list of what I’m planting, let me say this. Get that imposttor syndrome out of your head. Stop telling yourself you have a brown thumb. The truth is a green thumb is learned. Even the best gardeners have killed plenty of plants. I myself have killed plants, too. The only way you get good is with trial and error. So, don’t be afraid to start and let’s garden on. One of the most common questions I get is what kind of soil use. Well, I use a local company called Heirloom Soils. They’re really good because they have a ton of beneficial ingredients, but what I like about the most is they don’t use Pete Moss. They actually use cocoa core, which comes from coconuts. So, it’s much more renewable, but they have a ton of beneficial ingredients like leaf mold compost, other kind of compost, forest products. So, I would go to your local nursery and try to find a soil that’s local and has beneficial ingredients in it. The first vegetable I’m planting in my fall garden is broccoli. I got two varieties, gypsy broccoli and green magic broccoli. These are reliable varieties that grow well in my area. To save space, I’m planting radishes in between the broccoli. Radishes grow super fast, ready in about 25 to 30 days, which means I can harvest them long before the broccoli is mature. And here’s the best part. Because they grow so quickly, I can do multiple secession planting of radishes before the season’s over. So, as soon as I pull up one batch, I can tuck more seeds in and they’ll keep producing while the broccoli fills out. I’m making this raised bed super productive. I’m not stopping at just broccoli and radishes with this part of my garden. So, I’m also planting some dill and both garlic and onion chives as companions. The dill’s job is to attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and parasitic wasps. All of which go after pests like aphids and cabbage worms. But the chives, they pull double duty. They add flavor to the garden, but they also help deter pests with their strong smells, especially aphids and beetles. Together, this mix of broccoli, radishes, dill, and chives keep the bed super productive and better yet, protected. The next vegetable that’s perfect for fall gardening is cauliflower. So, I went with a few fun varieties this season. I got Darth Vader, which is a purple cauliflower, but I’ll be honest, I picked it partly because I’m a Star Wars fan, but also because of its purple color, and I wanted some nice color in my garden, so I thought this would be a good pick. I also picked up some cheddar, which is a yellow cauliflower that I’ve grown before, and I really liked it. So, another musthave in my garden this year again this fall. And I picked up some Romaesco, which is technically a green cauliflower, but it has some crazy spiral look to it. One of the coolest vegetables I’m planting in my garden this season. To support the cauliflower, I’m planting cilantro and sage as companions. When cilantro flowers, it attracts hoverflies and lace wings that feed on aphids, which are one of the main pests that go after cauliflower. Sage helps in a different way. Its strong scent masks the smell of the brassas confusing cabbage moss and flea beetles, so they’re less likely to find my plants. So, with cauliflower, cilantro, and sage working together, you got a good mix of color, flavor, and natural pest protection in this same bed. So, if you live in a warm zone like I do, you can actually still grow cucumbers in the fall. But, I would pick a fast maturing cucumber. Like, these are some pickling cucumbers. They are maturing within 55 days. So that means I’ll be harvesting some cucumbers and ready to make my own pickles before I get my first frost. So if you haven’t seen one of these towers before, this is called a green stock vertical garden tower. They’re really good for herbs, but I’ll be growing some beets in this tower because basically I ran out of space. So, this is a problem that most gardeners have is we see all these plants and seeds at nurseries and we want to grow everything and we do this. We make the same mistake every year. We buy too much. So, might be a little bit of a tight squeeze, but I’m going to try to grow beets in this tower anyway. So, basically, put one seed in each pocket. I think there’s 30 pockets in total, but I got some early wonder beets. These uh mature in 48 days. And I got some gold beads. These are 55 days. Next up, we have nappa cabbage. So, think of nappa cabbage as your regular cabbage, but taking it up a couple steps because you can use this in stir fries and even homemade kimchi. is a cool season crop that really shines in the fall once temperatures start to drop. Like other brassacas, it can attract pests like aphids and cabbage worms. So, pairing nappa cabbage with some companions can really be beneficial. Just like with some of the other crops, using dill and cilantro can help bring in beneficial insects that can help protect these cabbages from some pests. All right, guys. So, I got all my fall vegetables and herbs planted in my garden. Let me know in the comments what you’re growing this fall.
