I’ve been working hard on my lawn for the last 2 years. Mostly overseeding in the fall with Rye/KBG/Tall Fescue blend. And seeding in the spring with the same. These lighter green areas are driving me crazy. These areas look really healthy and are actually the nicest feeling areas of the lawn..(Haha). But what could be causing the lighter shade? Please help. New Jersey Cool season lawn.

I use a similar seed blend. Not sure about the green patches, it all looks healthy. Perhaps that’s where neighborhood dogs focus on going bathroom?

I see the same on my lawn during the fall period. I don’t see any weeds in the area I chalk it down to fall fertilizer, growing patterns, grass seed varieties and/or soil water retention.

i have the same thing. when i stuck a pitchfork in, all those areas had something underneath. Like a layer of rocks, old tree roots, compacted soil. I had to really work the pitchfork to get it to pierce the soil all the way. The dark green spots had very healthy, aerated soil and i had no issues driving a pitchfork through. I fed twice (once at seeding, then 4 weeks later) and 2 weeks ago added an extra layer of compost in those spots only. it has helped and is blending in much better now. maybe try that?

I usually end up just sprinkling some topsoil and water into balance whatever is going on. I feel it’s close looking grass or a little nitrogen deficient. spray some liquid nitrogen on lightly on and around to test.

Check the blades for a midvein. If it’s smooth with one vein running down the middle of the blade it’s poa.

I’ve been watching tons of videos lately, my guess, gigantic boulder!

Looks like an area of bentgrass.

Your lawn is THICK! What mow height do you use?

    Awesome lawn!

It’s bent grass. Use Tenacity to treat it. It will take multiple applications, I’ve fought it in my lawn.

it looks like bentgrass, but could also be poa triv.

    poa triv. no bueno.

Edit: if you say it doesn’t grow as fast as the darker green grass then it’s most likely not poa triv.

Bent grass and I unfortunately have the same thing. I’ve given up for now.
