I love these sunny days and the crisp nights, well, not too crisp. Because I hope because I’m not ready to dig up my geraniums and haul in all my tropical plants. I, I really dread that. But in the meantime, the perennials are putting on quite a show. This variety of goldenrod called Crown of rays is a thing of beauty. It’s vigorous and long lasting. This particular plant has been here for about 30 years or since I was in middle school and Toy Story was the number one movie. So let’s get this straight. Goldenrod does not cause hay fever. Like almost every other colorful flower, it produces pollen for bees, not your nose. The pollen is fairly sticky and heavy as pollen goes, and its flowers don’t just fling it into the air. They only make a limited supply, and their customers are bees and butterflies. Speaking of bees, one of their last and greatest sources of pollen. Are Astors, these New England natives are a bright season finale, and they come in shades of pinks and purples. Astors are self-seeding. Rob complains that he has too many, but this time of year. Who cares? The bees have got it good in the vegetable garden too. The Mexican flowers are still blooming with abandon. They love the single dahlia varieties. Actually, the double blooming dahlias don’t have any pollen for them. The bees also love marigolds and zinniass, and they will keep blooming as long as you deadhead them, and I find this scent. Intoxicating. My favorite autumnal surprise is the reemergence of the cultureums. These quirky bulbs have been in my garden, uh, also since Toy Story was the number one movie. Cultureums are native to the high plains of Spain and France, and I’ve always marveled how well they have adapted to Colorado.
