Autumn is the best time to get cracking on with important garden tasks. These tasks are a must-do to get ahead of the game and make sure to have no worries about your garden in the cold season.

This gardening expert has shared 5 gardening tips that are mandatory for autumn. This is the perfect time to make sure your garden is ready for spring’s arrival.

The 5 must-do gardening tasks are:

Prepare grass

This will ensure your grass is able to brace the harsh winter conditions. Lots of leaves fall onto the grass, during autumn, so regularly raking and removing them and all debris is all good preparation.

It is crucial to adjust mowing habits as colder air and soil temperatures and less sunlight substantially slows the speed at which grass grows. Therefore, mowing less often will make sure grass stays strong in freezing temperatures.

Any damaged grass; this is the time to repair it. Weeding the grass and adding seeds to bare patches will assist in you having a full lawn for spring.

Clean tools and outdoor furniture

Clean garden furniture thoroughly with mild washing-up liquid and warm water. Make sure it dries fully before storing it away, as this prevents mould and mildew growing during the colder winter months.

Clean your garden tools too, by adding a layer of oil to prevent rusting. When spring arrives, your tools will be in a great condition.

In addition, secure any outdoor furniture like trampolines or plant pots, as they may cause damage to your garden in windy conditions.

Plant spring bulbs

October is the perfect time to prepare your garden to have a colourful spring. The soil is still warm enough for roots to grow before freezing conditions. It is advised to plant spring-flowering bulbs like; daffodils, tulips, crocus, bluebells and hyacinth. The most important tip when planting, is to allow at least three times the bulb size in planting depth.

Prune

Cut those overgrown branches, leaves and buds. This will allow for healthy growth and shaping when spring comes. Removing dead and damaged branches, reduces the risk of spreading disease.

Refresh garden beds

Remove weeds and dead plants from your garden’s borders. The fertility of the soil can be increased by incorporating compost into the top few inches. This will increase nutrients and conditions. Adding a layer of compost or straw to the soil will protect it from freezing winter temperatures. This is called ‘mulching’ and helps hold onto moisture and protect plants’ roots.

The director at Dino Decking, Richard King shares his thoughts on how to protect wildlife over the winter months:

“You can protect garden wildlife by creating habitats for the colder months. Utilise your raked leaves and debris by creating a corner of shelter for insects and hedgehogs. Save branches from pruning and create a log pile. This will provide a shelter for animals, including newts and woodlice. As we approach bonfire season over Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night, it’s important to double-check your fire materials to ensure that no hedgehogs or other species are sheltering in it”.

These key steps are required for your garden this autumn. This makes sure you stay prepared and your garden can brace the colder temperatures, as well as eliminating all your garden concerns to enjoy the season.
