I found these tiny new roots around the root flare of this 10 yr camphor tree. I learnt camphor trees usually have big roots. Is it possible for it to grow fine roots around root flare? We have a bottlebrush plant about 1 meter away but these roots seem linked to the camphor.

trees will sometimes produce fine adventitious roots around the root flare, especially if the base has been buried or the soil stays a bit too moist. They’ll push new feeder roots higher up when oxygen is limited deeper down.

If you keep following the root flare and expose more soil, you’ll likely start seeing the larger structural roots, the ones that actually stabilize the tree. The fine ones you’re seeing near the surface are just opportunistic feeder roots taking advantage of available oxygen and moisture.

I’d keep gently uncovering the flare until you can clearly see where those big roots spread out. The top of the flare should sit slightly above grade.
