The main issue is my neighbour’s second-storey window overlooks my yard, so I’m after privacy solutions that still look good maybe plants, screens, or vertical gardens.
based in Australia – backayrd faces north so gets plenty of sun, and the weather swings from hot summers to cold winters.
Please don’t bag my small backyard 😅 just want to make the most of it!
Would love your ideas or examples of what’s worked for others in similar setups.

I got a large, deep rectangular planter with a 5 foot tall trellis custom built through a local hardware store. My spot is partial shade so I planted evergreen clematis armandii. It has grown amazingly well and filled in the trellis. If your trellis is just a bit taller than the fence and you position it carefully, you should be able to block most of the window.

  2. Greetings from Jersey City where this seems like a perfectly reasonable sized backyard. Get 3-6 giant pots (24”) along the fence line. Fill either with interesting trees or tuteurs/obelisks with aggressive climbing vines. Could also invest in a pergola plus climber (roses? clematis, bougainvillea?). You should ask your garden center what plants are feasible in your climate. My neighbor made a bunch of cube 24” and 36” planters out of lumber you could probably find easy plans for online. You’ll lose privacy in the winter. If you choose plants that aren’t evergreen, but you won’t be using the yard then as much anyway.
