In NC Mountains – Plant id says Oenothera biennis. I love finding natives I didn't plant while ripping away the annoying invasive grass. It feels like a treat.

Yay! That sucker will get big. I pass one on the highway on ramp every day and it’s at least 4 ft tall. I have 2 of the shorter ones in my garden (MO evening primrose and prairie sundrops) and the insects seem to like them.

Evening primrose is such a cool plant! Goldfinches always love the seedheads after it’s done blooming.

It’s the host plant for [this adorable moth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schinia_florida), and a pollen source for several species of [specialist bees](https://val.vtecostudies.org/projects/vtbees/lasioglossum-oenotherae/).

[Here’s some seeds](https://www.prairiemoon.com/oenothera-biennis-common-evening-primrose) if anyone wants to winter sow them, they’re super easy to grow.

I plant these to attract carpenter bees to my garden so they pollinate my crops
