    High light tends to bring out (red) anthocynanins in some plants they are better at protecting plant matter, chloroplasts in high light environments can be oxidised. The hypothesis for why oak leaves turn red in fall is that the tree is absorbing the chloroplasts for energy over winter and the red pigment protects the leaves from cold and light conditions.
