Not my tree and definitely old but im curious what happened?

This kind usually occurs after old branch loss, fungal infection, or repeated trauma over many years. The burls themselves aren’t harmful unless they crack or decay spreads inside the trunk.

    I’m guessing hit by a car, resulting in severe damage that can cause burls. Looks rad as tits.
